Diving Deep: Your New Year’s Resolution is Setting You Up to Fail

Why are we so obsessed with New Year’s Resolutions? For one, they give us a sense of control. And after our crazy two-year global pandemic– control doesn’t seem like such a bad idea.

The issue with our resolutions is that they tend to take one of three forms: we want to stop avoiding something (like organizing your home); we want to stop doing something that makes us happy (like eating or drinking); we want to do something that’s not natural to us or our habits (like exercising or journaling).

The problem arises that most of the goals we set just aren’t reasonable, and when we can’t achieve them, we get more anxious and depressed (which is why most resolutions never make it past January).

So, where are we going wrong with our resolutions, and how do we ACTUALLY feel better about them?

For starters, let’s not deal with absolutes. We’re not ALWAYS going to get up early and meditate or go to the gym for two hours five times a week. We have lives, and every goal needs some flexibility to work.

Next: stop thinking so negatively! So many resolutions are based on the idea that you don’t like yourself as you are, creating a circle of anxious and self-deprecating thoughts.

Stop thinking about the outcome, and remember the journey. It’s not just about how much weight you’ll lose or how much weight you can lift, but how you felt getting there, what you learned. If you appreciate the journey, you won’t get discouraged if you don’t meet your outcome.

You’re relying on other people, and that never works. When you have goals like finding a significant other, getting married, getting a promotion, you depend on an entire year’s worth of your happiness on another person– and that’s just not right.

So think smarter and harder, and just enjoy walking a mile in your own shoes.

See ya next week, same time same place.
